ABOUT US
Here's the lowdown on everything about #ProtectOurWhakapapa.
He aha tō mātou kaupapa - What are we about?
#ProtectOurWhakapapa is a grassroots kaupapa that provides relevant, evidence-based information and resources for whānau during the COVID-19 rāhui and beyond.
He aha te pūtake - What's driving us?
As Māori we have a history of surviving adversity, using concepts such as rāhui to keep our whānau safe and protected. If we apply tūpuna wisdom to our current circumstances, it can help us stay alive and our culture thrive.
Ngā whāinga matua - What are we trying to achieve?
Everything we do comes from a desire to support whānau in their journey through Te Pō (a place of isolation and growth) moving into Te Ao Mārama (new ways of living and being).
We set out to:
- Inspire whānau to channel and use their tūpuna wisdom.
- Empower whānau to develop resilience and capability.
- Collaborate with rōpū whose kaupapa aligns with ours.
- Inform whānau about current developments during COVID-19.C
- Connect whānau with support networks in their communities.
- Engage whānau through a variety of resources and online events.
He aha ai - Why are we doing this?
As the COVID-19 situation developed, we realised that there was a lack of information that engaged or was relevant to whānau. This motivated us to create a series of resources providing practical advice from a Māori world-view.
Me pēhea te whakatutuki - How do we roll?
Each day our team of researchers gather current evidence, statistics and data from a range of sources including Unite Against Covid-19, Ministry of Health, Civil Defence, Māori Health experts, as well as Māori and mainstream media outlets.
Based on this research, our communications team identifies and develops a daily key message. This is then distributed throughout a wide range of channels including our social media platforms, website, email and Iwi radio stations.
Ko wai ngā kaimahi - Who's behind the scenes?
#ProtectOurWhakapapa was started by a collective of Creative Nātives, based in Ōtepoti. This has since expanded to include kaimahi and volunteers from across Aotearoa - from Murihiku to Muriwhenua, from Tairāwhiti to Taranaki.
Ngā hononga - Our affiliations
#ProtectOurWhakapapa is not affiliated to any particular Government agency, Iwi, Business or Organisation. This allows us to work autonomously for the benefit of all whānau.
Me mahi tahi tātou - Want to collaborate?
We’re keen to work with like-minded organisations and kaupapa whose goals and values align with ours.
